2027: We won’t be passive anymore, we’ll reject underperforming politicians – Ohanaeze

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has vowed to become more politically assertive ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that it will only support leaders who have positively impacted the lives of their people.

Cross River State President of the group, Chief Chukwuemeka Egwuonwu, made the declaration during a reception held in his honour onYesterday in Calabar.

Egwuonwu said the era of political passivity was over, stressing that the organization would henceforth evaluate politicians by their performance and integrity.

“Every human being is a political animal, and Ohanaeze will not be different. Any person that has performed will have our blessings, but if we discover that someone has gone there to manipulate the masses and cause hardship, we will make a statement,” he said.

He commended Governor Bassey Otu for running an inclusive administration that extends benefits to non-indigenes, describing his leadership as people-oriented and fair.

In his remarks, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Senator John Mbata, urged the new Cross River executive to strengthen unity and uphold the values of pride, purpose, and cultural preservation.

Mbata said the national body was repositioning Ohanaeze as a global voice and a unifying force for the Igbo people at home and in the diaspora.

Governor Otu, who attended the event, praised the Igbo community for their contributions to commerce and development in the state, assuring them of continued partnership.

Egwuonwu, who succeeded the previous executive, pledged to unite members and expand the influence of Ohanaeze across Cross River State.
