The Super Eagles are expected to begin their training camp in Uyo on Monday ahead of the qualifiers.
Taiwo Awoniyi has been called up to replace injured Victor Osimhen in Nigeria’s squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that Osimhen will miss the two matches as he continues to recover from a muscle strain.
Super Eagles head coach, Éric Chelle, has now invited Awoniyi as a late replacement for the Galatasaray striker.
The Super Eagles announced the change on their official X account on Saturday.
“Coventry City striker, Taiwo Awoniyi replaces Victor Osimhen in Nigeria’s squad for the AFCON 2027 qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. Welcome back, Taiwo,” the post said.
The Super Eagles are expected to begin their training camp in Uyo on Monday ahead of the qualifiers.
Nigeria will host Madagascar next Thursday before travelling to Bissau to face Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29.
Awoniyi will now be expected to play a key role in Nigeria’s attack as the team begins its campaign to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
