Obtain medicines from legitimate sources to avoid complications- PSN warns Nigerians 

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, PSN, has advised Nigerians to obtain their medicines from legitimate sources to avoid complications and other health related challenges. 

PSN also advised Nigerians to avoid self-medication and seek professional assistance before taking drugs.

PSN Chairman in Oyo State, Victor Segun Ajanaku, gave the advice while addressing a press conference ahead of this year’s World Pharmacists’ Day with the theme “Empowering Pharmacist for a Healthier Future” in Ibadan, the state capital on Tuesday. 

Ajanaku noted that sourcing for drugs from illegitimate sources may have negative implications, revealing that self-medication can trigger health related challenges. 

He explained that a lot of pharmacists have left the state to seek greener pasture elsewhere, owing to the poor condition of service in the country.

Ajanaku also revealed that inflation and high cost of goods and services are responsible for the increase in cost of medicines. 

He said, “We encourage members of the public to obtain their medicines from legitimate, avoid self-medication and seek professional advice whenever necessary. 

“We also want to reassure the public that pharmacists remain committed to ensuring the safe, rational and effective use of medicines. 

“I can tell you from the registration that we do on a yearly basis, since I became Chairman in December 2023. For instance, in 2024, we had about 580 who registered, but now we have less than 500. 

“I can tell you that some left for greener pasture abroad. We are not denying that fact that the economic situation has made some people to leave.”
