Osun Assembly approves constitutional amendment for state police

The Osun State House of Assembly has approved a proposed constitutional amendment that would pave the way for the establishment of state police.

The lawmakers gave unanimous support to the proposal during Tuesday’s plenary after debating the request from the National Assembly.

Speaker Adewale Egbedun told the House that the National Assembly had written to state legislatures across Nigeria, asking them to consider and approve the proposed constitutional changes.

He said “the amendment had been forwarded to the House for its consideration and approval as part of the constitutional amendment processes.”

Speaking during the debate, Lawrence Adeoti, representing Ife South State Constituency, and Taofeek Olayiwola of Ede South State Constituency, backed the proposal.

They said creating state police could improve security and help authorities respond more quickly to security threats.

Adewumi Adeyemi, representing Obokun State Constituency, and Jeremiah Awoyeye, representing Ife Central State Constituency, also described the proposal as coming at the right time.

The lawmakers argued that state police would strengthen security at both state and local government levels.

They said the constitutional change would “enhance the ability of states to provide adequate security personnel and respond more effectively to security challenges within their respective jurisdictions.”

Following the debate, the Majority Leader, Babajide Kofoworola, who represents Ede North State Constituency, moved a motion for the Assembly to approve the proposed amendment.

Tajudeen Adeyemi, representing Ifelodun State Constituency, seconded the motion.

The lawmakers also considered the Osun State Park Management System Bill, 2026, during the sitting.

The House went into a Committee of the Whole to examine proposed amendments and corrections to the bill before adopting them.
