Iran has executed a man convicted of killing a police officer during clashes in 2022, the country’s judiciary announced on Sunday.
The execution comes as Iran continues to carry out more death sentences following the outbreak of war in the Middle East in February and anti-government protests that began late last year.
According to Mizan Online, a website linked to Iran’s judiciary, local prosecutor Aref Akbari confirmed that the death sentence had been carried out against the man identified in court only as Danial.
Danial was convicted of killing Reza Ehterami, a third lieutenant attached to Iran’s police emergency unit in Bandar Abbas, a city in southern Iran.
Akbari said the case was investigated and tried in court before the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence.
Reports by Iranian state media said Ehterami died in 2022 after being hit by a vehicle driven by Danial during clashes between police and fuel smugglers.
Iran carries out more executions annually than any other country except China, according to human rights organisations, including Amnesty International.
