2027: Our people should defend their votes – Ohanaeze warns election riggers

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has issued a stern warning to politicians, political parties and electoral officials against any attempt to manipulate the 2027 general elections by undermining the constitutional right of Ndigbo to freely elect their leaders.

Ohanaeze declared unequivocally that Ndigbo would not accept the theft of their votes, the imposition of unwanted political leaders or any deliberate attempt to subvert their collective democratic will.

The organisation insisted that no governor, political party, electoral official or influential politician was above the law or had the right to determine the political future of the people against their wishes.

It warned that anyone who conspired to rig the 2027 elections in Igboland should expect determined resistance from an electorate that was increasingly conscious of its democratic rights.

Ohanaeze called on Igbo youths, traditional rulers, community leaders, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to remain vigilant, mobilise eligible voters and defend the integrity of the ballot through lawful, peaceful and constitutionally recognised means.

The warning extends to Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states, as well as Igbo-speaking communities in Delta State, including Anioma, and Rivers State, including Ikwerre communities.

The pan-Igbo organisation insisted that every eligible voter deserved the freedom to cast a ballot without intimidation, coercion, vote-buying, ballot snatching or manipulation of election results.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and Professor Chibuikeya Achoakawa, and made available to journalists.

The statement said the Imeobi, the highest decision-making organ of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, had approved the organisation’s proposed Igbo Blueprint for the 2027 elections, which prioritises massive voter participation, electoral accountability, political consciousness and the protection of the people’s mandate.

Ohanaeze urged Ndigbo to reject voter apathy, obtain their Permanent Voter Cards, participate actively in the electoral process and remain vigilant throughout voting, counting, collation and the announcement of results.

The organisation called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to guarantee transparent, free, fair and credible elections in which the final results reflect the actual votes cast.

Invoking the cultural symbolism of the Nzọgbu Nzọgbu spirit and the traditional Amadioha deity, Ohanaeze declared that the Igbo people’s determination to resist injustice and defend their dignity must not be underestimated.

The organisation stressed that these cultural references represented the collective resolve of Ndigbo to reject oppression, political manipulation and the deliberate suppression of their democratic rights.

Ohanaeze further called on Ndigbo to vote according to their consciences and assess every candidate on merit, integrity, competence, performance and commitment to the collective interests of the people.

It said politicians who had failed to fulfil their promises, neglected their constituencies or abused public trust should not expect automatic electoral support merely because of their party affiliations.

The organisation also demanded accountability in local government administration and urged voters to scrutinise the management of public funds. It said any proven diversion or misappropriation of local government allocations must be investigated and those responsible made to face the consequences prescribed by law.

Ohanaeze warned prospective election riggers that political influence, financial power and public office would not excuse electoral crimes.

It called on the National Assembly to strengthen electoral legislation, close loopholes that facilitate malpractice and ensure the effective investigation and prosecution of offenders, with appropriate penalties imposed in accordance with the Constitution and due process.

“Ohanaeze’s position is clear: the votes of Ndigbo belong to the people, not to politicians or political parties. No individual has the right to steal the people’s mandate, and no political ambition justifies the subversion of democracy,” the statement said.

The organisation called on all stakeholders to ensure that the 2027 elections became a defining moment for democratic accountability in Igboland. It urged Ndigbo to remain united, vigilant and determined to exercise their constitutional rights without fear or intimidation.

“The message to election riggers is unequivocal: Ndigbo will not surrender their votes, their dignity or their democratic future. The spirit of Nzọgbu Nzọgbu and the symbolism of Amadioha stand as powerful reminders of a people’s determination to resist injustice.

“Anyone who attempts to manipulate the ballot must be prepared to answer for their actions under the law. In 2027, the people’s mandate must prevail,” the statement added.
