EndSARS: ‘He gave that order’ — Nigerians react as old Tinubu video on Lekki Toll Gate shooting resurfaces
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has come under fire on social media following the resurfacing of an old video in which he spoke about victims of the October 20, 2020, Lekki Toll Gate shooting, with Nigerians alleging that he ordered the shooting.
In the video, which is currently making the rounds on social media, Tinubu appeared to suggest that victims of the shooting at the Lekki Toll Gate should also answer questions about the incident.
He said in the video: “Those who suffered the casualties during the gunshot need to answer some questions too. How were they there, and how long were they there? What kind of characters are they? Even though we want to help, we still must extract information that will help the government prepare in the future or understand how and when to react.”
The #EndSARS protest was a youth-led movement that swept across Nigeria in October 2020, following widespread allegations of police brutality, particularly abuses linked to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, a unit of the Nigeria Police Force. The protests later grew into a nationwide demand for police reform, accountability and better governance.
One of the most significant moments of the movement occurred on October 20, 2020, at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, where protesters had gathered to demonstrate against police brutality.
