Four people have been killed and 16 others injured after a container truck overturned onto an interstate Toyota Hiace bus on Berger Bridge, inward Eleko, along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway in Lagos State.

A statement by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, said the fatal accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, October 28, 2026, when an articulated truck carrying a 20-foot container collided with the bus, with registration number GME-589 ZU.

According to the agency, preliminary findings showed that the truck was travelling up the bridge at excessive speed when it collided with the bus.

The truck driver reportedly lost control while attempting to avoid the collision, causing the truck to overturn onto the bus.

"The impact was severe and tragically resulted in the loss of four (4) adult males who were confirmed dead at the scene, while sixteen (16) other adult males sustained varying degrees of injuries," the statement said.

LASEMA said its Beta Whales Team from Epe Base was immediately deployed after the agency received a distress call about the crash.

The response team, working with the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and the Nigeria Police Force, secured the scene, administered first aid to the injured victims and took them to Epe General Hospital for further medical attention.

The agency said a private crane had been secured to recover the overturned truck and container and allow responders to safely remove the bodies of the deceased.

It added that the recovery operation was ongoing, while traffic management measures had been put in place to ensure safety along the affected road.

The Lagos State Government commiserated with the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.

Meanwhile, LASEMA said its response teams also handled two other road incidents in Agege and Igando on Wednesday.

At about 4:09 am, the agency's Tiger Team from C3 Base responded to a truck accident near Vetland School, inward Agege Pen Cinema, along Old Abeokuta Road.

The team found a truck with registration number KTU-940XT that had rammed into a solar-powered streetlight pole before mounting the road median and obstructing traffic.

Preliminary findings attributed the accident to reckless driving. No casualty was recorded, although the streetlight pole and the front section of the truck were damaged.

LASEMA said it immediately diverted traffic to prevent further incidents and ease movement in the area.

Following the arrival of the agency's heavy-duty recovery equipment, Elephant, the truck was removed from the road and taken to Abattoir Police Station for further investigation and safekeeping.

The road was subsequently cleared and reopened to traffic.

In another incident, LASEMA's Beta Team from Igando Base responded to a collision involving a DAF truck, with registration number SMK 795 XY, and a Toyota Corolla, with registration number AKD 169 EA, at Lanre Bus Stop, inward Igando, along LASU-Igando Road.

According to LASEMA, information gathered at the scene indicated that a broken-down truck on the opposite side of the road had caused traffic to build up before the DAF truck, which was driving against traffic, collided with the Corolla.

The collision blocked half of the road inward Igando. No death was recorded, but the Corolla driver sustained a minor head injury and was taken to Igando General Hospital by an associate.

LASEMA said the Corolla had been towed to Igando Police Station, while its heavy-duty recovery equipment, Super Metro, had been deployed to move the DAF truck to a lay-by and restore traffic flow. The operation was still ongoing at the time of the report.

The Lagos State Government, under Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property through continued investment in emergency management.

The government also commended LASEMA and the collaborating agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the FRSC, for their prompt response to the incidents.

Motorists were urged to observe speed limits, avoid driving against traffic and other reckless manoeuvres, and ensure their vehicles were in good mechanical condition before travelling.

Residents were also advised to report emergencies through the state's toll-free lines.
