Consumer protection council seizes 5,964 expired drinks in Kano

The Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KCPC) has seized 5,964 bottles of expired soft drinks allegedly kept for sale at Singer Market in Kano.

The seizure followed a complaint received by the council that a trader had stocked a large quantity of soft drinks whose expiry dates had passed.

Following the report, the council sent its enforcement officers to the market to investigate and remove the expired products before they could be sold to unsuspecting customers.

The council’s Director of Enforcement and Removal of Substandard Products, Alhaji Auwalu A. Muhammad, said the agency was carrying out its duties in line with the law.

He assured residents that the council would continue to seize expired products and items whose packaging details, including expiry dates, had been altered.

Auwalu said the council was committed to removing unsafe and substandard products from the market to protect consumers’ health.

The Executive Secretary of the council, Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, said the agency would continue its enforcement activities in markets, shops and supermarkets across Kano State.

He warned traders against threatening or intimidating enforcement officers, saying they were only carrying out their legal duties to protect residents from illnesses caused by consuming expired or unsafe products.

He also advised traders to check their goods regularly and remove expired or damaged products from their shops instead of hiding them or changing their expiry dates.

According to him, such cooperation would protect consumers, build trust in businesses and support business growth.

Ibrahim also thanked Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for supporting the council and providing the resources needed to carry out its duties.

The council said it would increase market inspections and continue to identify and remove expired and substandard products across the state.
