Re-elected Nigerian-American Adeyina blames Trump for midterm losses
Nigerian-American lawmaker Segun Adeyina has blamed the Republican Party’s defeat in the United States midterm elections on President Donald Trump’s failure to address rising living costs, saying the war in Iran worsened the financial difficulties facing American families.
Adeyina, who secured re-election to the Georgia House of Representatives for District 110, said voters rejected political slogans and instead made their choices based on their ability to afford basic necessities.
Speaking on Channels Television’s *Sunrise Daily* on Friday, the Democratic lawmaker described his party’s performance in the November 3 elections as a political tsunami.
He argued that concerns over rent, mortgage payments, food prices and access to healthcare played a decisive role in shaping the outcome.
“People did not vote based on political slogans. People voted on issues happening on their kitchen tables,” Adeyina said.
“Can they pay their rent, their mortgage? Can they afford groceries? Can they access healthcare? These are all important items that the everyday person has been faced with over the last couple of years.”
The lawmaker criticised Trump’s handling of economic challenges, particularly the impact of the conflict with Iran on household expenses.
According to him, the administration’s inability to ease financial pressure contributed to the strong showing by Democratic candidates.
“Affordability was really one of the key issues that the president couldn’t truly address; and going to Iran, for us, drove up our costs, drove up the challenge that we have with affordability,” he said.
Adeyina maintained that the election results demonstrated growing dissatisfaction among voters struggling with everyday expenses.
“Some people call it a blue wave. I call it a blue tsunami,” he declared.
“People showed up and turned out to vote on issues that concerned them on their kitchen tables.”
Reflecting on his own electoral success, Adeyina said his victory demonstrated the confidence residents of Georgia’s House District 110 had in his leadership.
The Nigerian-American politician first won election to the state legislature in 2022 and has now secured a third term.
“I am a proud Nigerian-American, and this victory is very important,” he said.
He explained that his initial victory introduced him to the community, while his subsequent re-elections reflected voters’ satisfaction with his representation.
Adeyina represents a district covering communities including Grayson, Snellville, Lawrenceville and Loganville.
He was among several Nigerian-Americans who secured victories in the November 3 midterm elections.
Other successful candidates included Will Jawando, Junior Ezeonu, Oye Owolewa, Solomon Adesanya, Carol Kazeem and Gab Okoye, who won elective positions across different states and local government jurisdictions.
The midterm elections delivered significant gains for Democrats, who capitalised on public dissatisfaction with the cost of living and the direction of the Trump administration.
