Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders in Nigerian football, particularly the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), to address challenges in the country’s football administration and unlock the sport’s full potential.
Sanwo-Olu made the call on Friday when the new Secretary-General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Samson Adamu, paid him a courtesy visit at Lagos House, Marina.
The governor pledged the Lagos State Government’s support for Adamu as he assumes responsibility for advancing football administration across Africa, describing his appointment as a source of pride for Nigeria and the continent.
He congratulated Adamu and commended his professionalism and commitment to football administration, expressing confidence in his ability to uphold high standards of integrity and contribute to the development of African football.
Sanwo-Olu stressed the need for football stakeholders in Nigeria to work together, particularly through the NFF, to overcome existing administrative challenges and provide stronger leadership for the game.
Highlighting Lagos State’s investment in sports development, the governor disclosed that the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere had undergone extensive refurbishment as part of efforts to attract major international football competitions.
He said the state was also investing in sports infrastructure and grassroots development, noting that sports remained an important vehicle for youth empowerment, economic growth, talent discovery and social development.
The governor further reaffirmed Lagos’ readiness to host the CAF Awards, assuring the continental football governing body of the state’s full cooperation in organising a successful event.
Speaking earlier, Adamu described his visit to Lagos as a homecoming, acknowledging the state’s contribution to his professional journey and growth in football administration.
The CAF Secretary-General, who previously worked closely with football stakeholders in Lagos, pledged to strengthen collaboration with the state government and the NFF to identify and develop football talents across Nigeria.
He also drew attention to Nigeria’s hosting responsibilities, including the forthcoming CAF General Assembly in Abuja and the CAF Awards in Lagos, describing the events as opportunities to demonstrate the country’s organisational capacity and strengthen its standing in African football.
Adamu expressed optimism that the two events would attract leading football administrators, former players and top talents from across the continent.
He said the gatherings would provide an opportunity to project a positive image of Nigeria and Lagos to the international community.
