When Was The Last Time We Had Global Afrobeats Smash Hits?
Afrobeats star DJ Neptune has spoken about the current state of the genre, explaining why global chart-topping hits have become less frequent and sharing his perspective on the challenges facing the industry.
Speaking on The Echoo Room podcast, hosted by Teddy A, DJ Neptune described the last few years as a “constant religion” for the genre, when every year would bring one or two global Afrobeats hits that shook the world.
“Two, three years ago, it was a constant religion. Every year we would have one or two or three global Afrobeats smash hits,” he said. “When was the last time we had that? I feel personal interest, greed, and lack of professionalism are what is now limiting the genre.”
Despite the setbacks, DJ Neptune expressed optimism, noting that Afrobeats enthusiasts remain loyal and the genre is simply going through a transitional phase. He encouraged upcoming artists to focus on knowledge, patience, and sustainable career building rather than chasing instant wealth.
“You guys are seeing what is going on. Don’t get carried away with the frenzy. Don’t be in a hurry to say, ‘I want to drive Benz and all of that.’ Own your stuff. Let’s go back to the drawing board,” he said.
The music star also highlighted the importance of co-ownership in the industry, particularly regarding streaming platforms.
According to DJ Neptune, major labels often co-own these platforms, giving them leverage over artists’ earnings.
“If we have to co-own, let’s co-own, because a lot of these major labels co-own the streaming platforms. That puts them in a better position to control some selling things,” he explained.
