2026 WCQ: Chelle speaks as CAF suspends Ademola Lookman for next game

Coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Eric Chelle has reacted to Ademola Lookman’s suspension for the last qualifying game.

Lookman will not be part of the Super Eagles squad for their game against Benin Republic after receiving a Yellow Card in Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Lesotho on Friday.

Lookman picked up a yellow card in the 64th minute, being his second of the qualifying campaign.

CAF regulation states that two Yellow Cards automatically rules a player out of the next fixture.

Chelle replaced the Atalanta attacker with Samuel Chukwueze in the 71st minute.

Speaking after the game, Chelle dismissed concerns over the absence of Lookman, saying that the “the team remains focused and confident heading into the encounter.”

He said his squad has “enough depth to compete effectively despite the setback.”

The Malian coach further noted that while Lookman’s “suspension is unfortunate, the squad possesses the character and determination to secure victory.”

The Malian coach said his team must focus on making the most of the players available and ensuring a strong performance against Benin.

He said Atalanta forward will still play a role from the sidelines, offering support and encouragement to his teammates as they push for qualification.

He emphasised that every player must be mentally prepared to contribute, whether as a starter or substitute.

Chelle underlined the importance of maintaining focus and converting chances in the decisive match, reiterating his belief that Nigeria must take full control of their qualification destiny.

Nigeria remains third in Group C despite the win over Lesotho, with their next opponents, Benin Republic topping the group and South Africa in second place.
