Osun APC accuses Assembly of insensitivity over Akinlalu killings

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused the State House of Assembly of insensitivity over the killing of no fewer than ten residents of Akinlalu, a community in Ife North local government area, allegedly by operatives of the Amotekun Corps.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the party’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, said the House of Assembly had shown a lack of empathy in its handling of the incident.

“The Egbedun-led House has demonstrated insensitivity over the callous killings of innocent natives of Akinlalu by some trigger-happy Amotekun Corps,” the statement read.

The APC recalled that on September 30, 2025, operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps reportedly invaded Akinlalu community and opened fire on residents, killing several people and injuring others.

The incident, it added, prompted the closure of the Amotekun offices in Ile-Ife and Osogbo and the arrest of some corps officials by the police.

According to the statement, the APC criticised the Assembly for remaining silent for ten days after the killings, only to later condemn the police for sealing the Amotekun offices and arresting its personnel.

“It is saddening that the Assembly waited ten solid days before making any statement on the extra-judicial killings of innocent citizens,” Olabisi stated.

The party questioned the moral justification of the lawmakers for prioritising the reopening of Amotekun offices over justice for the victims.

“What moral and legal justification has the Assembly to place the sealing of the Amotekun offices above the slaughtering of innocent natives of Akinlalu?” the statement queried.

The APC alleged that the Assembly’s reaction gave the impression that the lawmakers were more concerned about the inconvenience faced by the Amotekun Corps than the loss of lives in the community.

It said, “The feeling out there is that the incident would not have mattered to the lawmakers if the Amotekun offices had not been sealed.”

Olabisi described the House’s condemnation of the police as unnecessary, saying the Nigeria Police Force was within its rights to investigate and make arrests.

“The whipping of sentiment by the Assembly leadership on the sealing of the offices and arrest of Amotekun officials isn’t necessary,” he said.

The party accused the Osun Amotekun Corps Commandant, Isaac Adekunle Omoyele, of human rights abuses, alleging that his leadership had tarnished the image of the corps and called for reforms within the security outfit to restore public confidence.

“We are not saying Amotekun should be scrapped, but it must be properly administered. It must not become an instrument of oppression or political victimisation under any administration,” Olabisi said.

The party urged the Assembly to act responsibly and ensure accountability over the killings adding, “The Speaker should stop behaving as if blood is not running in his veins. The House must prevail on the Amotekun commandant to face investigation and help uncover the truth behind the Akinlalu carnage.”

The Osun Assembly Speaker, Adewale Egbedun had on Friday, called for the immediate unsealing of the offices of the Amotekun Corps, allegedly locked up by police officers probing the role of the outfit in the killings.

Operatives of the Intelligence Response Team from the office of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, reportedly sealed operational bases of Osun Amotekun in Osogbo and Ife Central local government area where five personnel were arrested after a public outcry.

Speaking to newsmen on Friday in Osogbo, the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, on behalf of other lawmakers, said Amotekun, being an organisation created by law, could not be stopped by the police from performing its statutory duties.

He said that reports at his disposal linked the lawmaker representing Osun East in the Senate, Adenigba Fadahunsi, to the involvement of police operatives from the IGP’s office in the arrest of Amotekun personnel in the state.

Meanwhile, Fadahunsi confirmed that he invited the police, urging the House of Assembly to exercise caution in its claims that laws enacted by it could shield the Amotekun, even when its operatives had allegedly violated the Constitution.

According to him, those killed were his constituents, warning that any further attempts to cause loss of lives in the Osun East Senatorial District would be resisted.
