Putin, al-Sharaa pledge to deepen Russia–Syria ties

President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday held talks at the Kremlin with the President of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, who is in Russia on a working visit.

The discussions centred on the current state and future of Russia–Syria political, trade, economic, and humanitarian relations, as well as the broader situation in the Middle East.

Putin noted that both nations have maintained diplomatic ties for over 80 years, first established during “a very difficult period” for Russia and the Soviet Union, in 1944.

According to the president, their “deep-running” bilateral relations have never been influenced by momentary political considerations or vested interests.

Putin disclosed that over 4,000 Syrian youths are currently enrolled in Russian higher education institutions, urging them to contribute meaningfully to reinforcing Syrian statehood.

The Russian leader commended the conduct of the 5th October parliamentary election, describing it as “a great success” capable of helping to consolidate Syrian society.

“These may be challenging times for Syria,” he said. “However, holding an election could help all political forces in Syria work together more effectively and strengthen their ties.”

Noting that the nations’ Intergovernmental Commission has been operational since 1993, Putin announced the resumption of its activities to further deepen Russia–Syria relations.

“There are quite a few interesting and useful undertakings on its agenda,” he said. “We stand ready to do everything to fulfil them, along with our agreements to maintain regular consultations.”

In his remarks, al-Sharaa said Damascus remained bound by “long-standing historical ties” with Russia, connected through robust bridges of cooperation, including practical and material partnerships.

“Syria is striving to advance our political objectives, and Russia will play a major role in this process,” he stressed. “We will seek to revitalise the entire spectrum of our relations.”

The Syrian president praised Putin and Moscow for their steadfast support, adding that the most important priority now is achieving stability, both within Syria and across the region.
