UK cuts post-study work visa to 18 months under new immigration reforms

Beginning January 1, 2027, international students in the United Kingdom will have only 18 months to secure employment after graduation, a sharp reduction from the current two-year post-study work period. The move forms part of wide-ranging immigration reforms outlined in a white paper released in May and discussed in Parliament last week.

According to the UK Home Office, the new policy aims to ensure that international graduates contribute more effectively to the British economy. In a statement issued on October 14, the ministry said data revealed that “many holders had not transitioned into graduate-level employment as intended,” prompting the need for reform.

The policy overhaul will also increase financial requirements for student visas beginning in the 2025–2026 academic year. Applicants will now need to prove they possess “sufficient funds” to support themselves while studying in the UK. However, the Home Office did not specify what amount qualifies as sufficient. Currently, students studying in London must show proof of £1,483 per month for up to nine months, while those studying outside the capital must demonstrate access to £1,136 per month for the same period.

In addition to tightening student visa conditions, the government has announced a 32 percent increase in the Immigration Skills Charge (ISC) paid by employers who sponsor skilled foreign workers. The Home Office explained that the additional revenue will be directed toward boosting investment in British workers and reducing dependence on overseas recruitment. “The Parliamentary process to increase the charge will begin later this week,” the statement noted.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasised that the reforms are also designed to strengthen social integration among migrants. “If you come to this country, you must learn our language and play your part,” Mahmood said. Under the new regulations, migrants will be required to demonstrate English proficiency equivalent to A level standards in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

The English language assessment will be administered by a Home Office-approved provider, with results verified as part of the visa application process. Mahmood added that the measure is intended to ensure migrants can fully participate in British society and the workforce.

The reforms will also see a doubling of the number of highly skilled migrants allowed entry under special visa routes. The Home Office said these routes would target “the best researchers, designers, and creatives working in film and television” to enhance the UK’s competitiveness in innovation-driven industries.

Further adjustments to the global talent route are expected in 2026 as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to refine migration pathways that align with national economic priorities.

While the changes have drawn mixed reactions from education and business groups, officials insist the new framework will balance economic growth with immigration control, ensuring that only the most capable and committed individuals remain and contribute meaningfully to the UK economy.
