INEC’s biggest problem political – YIAGA Africa

Samson Itodo, Executive Director of YIAGA Africa, has said the biggest problem facing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is political rather than technical.

Itodo made the remarks on Thursday during an interview on Arise Television, monitored by DAILY POST.

“INEC’s biggest problem is not technical but political in nature, and it is about the political interference with the electoral commission.

“When you think about the appointment process, it is a constitutional matter. There are proposals that powers should be removed from the president, which we strongly agree with under the new INEC campaign.

“I doubt, to be honest, that particular provision is going to pass — the proposal that the power be removed from the president. I don’t think that is going to pass for various obvious reasons.

“It will take a statesman who is the president to amend the constitution to reduce his power of appointing the INEC officials,” he said.
