2027: ADC inaugurates new leadership in Adamawa, moves to strengthen structure

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has inaugurated an interim leadership in Adamawa State as part of efforts to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections, despite the existence of a splinter group in the state.

Speaking at the inauguration, Babachir Lawal, North East Zonal vice chairman of the ADC and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, affirmed the legitimacy of the new leadership, saying its formation followed due process in line with the party’s constitution.

Lawal said the National Working Committee (NWC) approved the new structure and warned against acts of indiscipline and defiance.

“The new leadership is the substantive one because due diligence has been followed in accordance with the constitution of the party,” Lawal stated.

“The national chairman, Senator David Mark, has assured that the ADC will be governed strictly according to constitutional provisions. Anyone who disagrees with that has no place in this party,” he added.

He urged members to embrace peace and unity, stressing that internal disagreements should not undermine the party’s progress.

“Every politician is entitled to be insulted, it is part of politics, but it should not affect our conduct. Let us cooperate with the new committee, which was selected in line with the guidelines of the party’s founding fathers. This process has been duly authenticated and approved by the NWC,” he said.

Lawal expressed confidence that the new structure would serve as a foundation for effective party management in Adamawa.

In his acceptance speech, Sadiq Dasin, the new State chairman, described his emergence as “a child of necessity,” following unsuccessful attempts to reconcile the Shehu Yohanna and Mustapha Arabi factions.

Dasin pledged to restore unity and inclusiveness within the party, promising that women and youth would play key roles in its future direction.

“Sixty percent of elective positions in the coming congresses will be reserved for women and youth in recognition of their strategic importance to the party’s success,” he said.

He also assured that forthcoming congresses across wards and local government areas would be transparent and credible.

Those inaugurated included former governor Umar Bindo, Ishaku Abbo, and Abdul-Aziz Nyako, among others.
