Women protest Abia youth’s death during Police interrogation

About 150 women on Monday stormed a police station in Bende LGA of Abia State to protest the death of a youth, Mr Akobundu Wisdom Okorie, who died during interrogation at the station last week.

The women who arrived the police station with green leaves, sang songs of grief, with some of them rolling on the ground in front of the station.

They condemned the actions of the police officers allegedly involved in the incident. They demanded that the officers should be sacked immediately and made to face justice.

Some of the women including Madam Chinyere Grace and Mrs Joy Uwa, said it was shocking that a young man who honoured a police invitation in good health, would be declared dead after some hours.

Praying in front of the Bende Police Station, the women said they were handing over the matter to God to avenge the youth’s death.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police Abia State Command, Danladi Isa, during the weekend, visited Bende, where he addressed the members of the community.

The CP who called for calm, announced that the officers who were involved in the interrogation were being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Umuahia.

“I assure you that justice will be done,” CP Danladi Isa assured.
