ICRC cries out, urges world leaders to end horrific murders in Sudan

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has called on world leaders to take urgent action to stop the ongoing killings and abuses against unarmed civilians in Sudan’s Al-Fasher region and other parts of the country.

In a statement shared on X, ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric said civilians are facing “brutal attacks, rampant sexual violence, and deliberate destruction of essential services.”

She said, “The appalling abuses of the rules of war we are witnessing in Sudan are indefensible. No patient should be killed in a hospital, and no civilian shot while trying to flee their home. These horrific attacks must stop and international humanitarian law must be respected.”

Spoljaric lamented that the world has ignored the suffering of Sudanese civilians, despite repeated appeals to respect humanitarian law. “The world has turned a blind eye while civilians in Sudan have endured unthinkable horror,” she said.

The ICRC chief also confirmed that five staff members of the Sudanese Red Crescent Society were killed recently in North Kordofan, describing it as another tragic reminder of the dangers faced by aid workers.

She warned that lives in Sudan now depend on immediate and strong intervention from the international community.

“The world cannot stand by as civilians are stripped of safety and dignity, and the rules of war meant to protect them are trampled,” she added.
