Amnesty International condemns Lagos police over threats to Sowore

Amnesty International has criticised the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, for allegedly issuing threats against activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore.

In a post on X, the human rights organisation described the police’s action as outrageous, saying that declaring Sowore wanted amounts to an abuse of power and a blatant act of intimidation.

Amnesty International said the threats show a disregard for human rights and urged the police chief to immediately withdraw his statements.

“The CP must do his actual job, which is facilitating and upholding the right to peaceful protest,” it said, adding that Nigerians have a constitutional right to express themselves and demonstrate peacefully without fear of harassment.
