Adamawa’s Lungunda Traditional Council announces name change to Nungura

The Lunguda Traditional Council in Guyuk Local Government Area of Adamawa State has announced a name change and will henceforth be known as the Nungura Traditional Council.

The rebranding was formalized through a sworn affidavit filed at the Adamawa State High Court, affirming the shift from “Lunguda” to “Nungura.”

The new name is perceived as reflecting the preferred identity of a people numbering over a million.

The name “Nungura” is derived from “Nungiraba,” meaning “people who are very close to one another.”

The affidavit supporting the new name notes that “Lunguda,” a colonial imposition, is being replaced by “Nʋngʋra,” aligning with dialect clusters such as Gwaanda, Cerii, and Deele.
