Adamu honoured with Nelson Mandela award for excellence in sports development
Dr. Ezekiel Adamu, Chief Executive Officer of Balmoral Group Promotions and a seasoned boxing promoter, has been honoured with the Nelson Mandela Award for Excellence 2025 in recognition of his contributions to youth empowerment and sports development in Nigeria.
Adamu, who recently organised the biggest boxing event in Africa on October 1, Nigeria’s Independence Day, received the award at a gala ceremony in Bari, Italy, for his commitment to creating opportunities and inspiring young Nigerians to reach their full potential.

In a statement, the organisers commended Dr. Adamu’s “exceptional leadership, vision, and enduring contribution to African sports and youth engagement,” adding that his work continues to uplift communities and foster growth across the continent.
“I am truly honoured to be recognised under a powerful name that stands for determination, courage, forgiveness, faith, and love,” Dr. Adamu said after receiving the award.

“This award is not just for me; it belongs to my team, who have worked tirelessly on this journey, and to the amazing athletes who step into the ring to fight with determination and courage. This is all for them.”
Adamu reaffirmed his belief in the potential of Africa’s youth, noting that with 70 per cent of the continent’s 1.4 billion people under the age of 35, the future of global sports and innovation lies in Africa.
“The journey is just beginning. Expect the next world champions to come from Africa,” he said.
Ndileka Mandela, social activist and eldest grandchild of Nelson Mandela, praised honourees like Dr. Adamu for continuing her grandfather’s legacy through empowerment and service.
“Life is not measured by what we gain, but by what we give. True purpose is found in uplifting others and using our gifts to light the path for those who come after us,” she said.
Also speaking at the forum, Adenike Adeyemi, Executive Director of FATE Foundation, highlighted the creative economy’s transformative potential for Africa’s development.
“The creative economy is a powerful engine for global transformation, and Africa’s entrepreneurs are ready to lead that charge,” Adeyemi said.
Taiwo Meghoma, a fashion entrepreneur, added, “Life is not measured by what we gain, but by what we give.
“True purpose lies in uplifting others, using our gifts, our voice, and our time to light the path for those who come after us.”
Dr. Adamu’s recognition as a Mandela Award recipient underscores his pioneering role in sports promotion, youth engagement, and nation-building, solidifying his status as one of Africa’s leading advocates for social and sporting excellence.
