Army clarifies Ojo shooting, says killing happened outside military cantonment

The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has refuted viral social media reports claiming that gunmen shot and killed a civilian inside the Ojo Military Cantonment in Lagos.

In a statement issued, by Musa Yahaya, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, the Division clarified that the incident did not take place within the military facility as widely reported.

According to the Army, preliminary findings revealed that the shooting occurred on October 18 at a junction near the Mammy Market abattoir gate, outside the cantonment premises. 

The incident was reportedly linked to suspected cult-related violence, which tragically led to the death of one Rilwan Adekunle.

“Upon receiving a distress call, our standby team responded immediately. The victim was rushed to the Ojo Cantonment Medical Centre, being the nearest medical facility, but was unfortunately confirmed dead by the medical team,” the statement read in part.

The Army described the killing as unfortunate and extended its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. 

It further urged the public and media outlets to verify information from relevant authorities before circulating reports that could mislead the public or create unnecessary tension.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring peace, security, and public safety, and will continue to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to maintain law and order in the area,” the statement added.

The Division also reaffirmed its determination to maintain professionalism and transparency in its operations while urging Lagos residents to remain calm and law-abiding.
