ASUU strike: UniJos deserted as lecturers shun classes
The University of Jos on Monday joined the two-week warning strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), effectively grounding all academic activities on campus.
When BusinessDay visited the university, lecture halls were empty, and there were no signs of teaching or learning.
The university’s main gate was partially closed, indicating limited access, while students lingered around without direction. Notably, academic staff were absent from campus, in line with the nationwide strike directive issued by ASUU’s national leadership.
Jurbe Joseph Molwus, a professor and chairman of ASUU, UniJos chapter, confirmed the development in a telephone interview with BusinessDay.
He said the branch had fully complied with the national directive, and there would be no reversal until further notice. “We are fully on strike. There is no going back,” he stated.
The warning strike, declared last week by ASUU, is aimed at drawing attention to the federal government’s failure to implement previous agreements, poor funding of public universities, and unresolved welfare issues affecting lecturers across Nigeria.

With UniJos joining the strike, academic activities have now halted in several federal and state universities, leaving students stranded and uncertain about the continuity of their academic programmes.
