Bauchi to distribute five million mosquito nets in 2026
The Bauchi State Government plans to distribute five million insecticide-treated mosquito nets to households across the state in 2026 as part of efforts to curb the spread of malaria.
Adamu Umar Sambo, executive chairman of the Bauchi State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (BACATMA), disclosed this while briefing journalists in Bauchi. He said the large scale distribution campaign aims to protect citizens from mosquito bites that transmit malaria.
According to him, BACATMA’s malaria prevention initiatives have continued to yield positive outcomes, recording a sharp decline in malaria cases among children under five, from over 70 percent to less than 20 percent as of October 2025.
Sambo attributed the improvement to the state’s successful implementation of the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) programme, which involves administering anti-malarial drugs to children during the rainy season, the peak malaria transmission period.
He said the recently concluded SMC campaign engaged over 22,000 temporary workers for five months, reaching nearly two million children and achieving more than 97 percent of its target coverage.
The BACATMA boss also noted that the agency had scaled up tuberculosis services with the activation of 93 new diagnostic centres offering testing and treatment services.

On HIV response, Sambo said the agency had made significant progress, with 95 percent of people living with HIV in the state now aware of their status.
He commended Governor Bala Mohammed for his unwavering commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery in Bauchi, adding that the government had revitalised BACATMA through the refurbishment of vehicles and renovation of office facilities.
