Dangote announces expansion target to become world’s largest refinery at 1.4m bpd

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man and President of Dangote Refinery, has announced the intention to expand its 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery to become the world’s largest at 1.4 million barrels per day.

He disclosed this at a briefing in Lagos on Sunday.

He noted that if the expansion is achieved, his refinery would topple the Jamnagar Refinery in India, with 1,240,000 barrels per day, as the largest refinery in the world.

According to him, the facility will also expand the production of polypropylene from 900,000 metric tonnes to 2.4 million metric tonnes per annum.

Dangote, however, did not give details of the timeline or how he and his team intend to achieve the ambitious feat.

“We are expanding the Dangote Petroleum Refinery from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day.

“Upon completion, this will make it the largest refinery in the world, surpassing the Jamnagar Refinery in India,” he stated.

Recently, the company kicked off its direct petrol supply scheme.

However, petroleum product marketers had lamented the non-supply and delays of petrol products after making payments to Dangote Refinery.

Bloomberg earlier reported that Dangote faced operational setbacks, which impacted its petrol supply in the country.

DAILY POST reports that petrol retail prices have skyrocketed in the past weeks amid Dangote Refinery’s supply glitch, with filling stations dispensing the product between ₦950 and ₦965 per litre in Abuja as of Sunday.
