Egypt’s president endorses Trump’s Gaza ceasefire proposal

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has voiced strong support for US President Donald Trump’s proposed Gaza ceasefire plan, as delegates from Hamas, Israel, and the United States gather in Cairo for talks on a potential truce and hostage-prisoner exchange.

Speaking at an event commemorating Egypt’s 1973 war with Israel, a conflict that ultimately paved the way for peace through the Camp David Accords, Sisi lauded Trump’s initiative, describing it as a “hopeful step toward lasting peace.”

“I express my appreciation to President Donald Trump for his initiative aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Gaza after two years of war, bloodshed, and devastation.

“A ceasefire, the exchange of prisoners, the rebuilding of Gaza, and the launch of a credible political process leading to the recognition of a Palestinian state, these are the true foundations of peace and stability.” Sisi said.

He also used the occasion to reaffirm Egypt’s historical commitment to peace, calling the 1979 Camp David Accords the cornerstone of regional diplomacy.

“Peace enforced by power only breeds more conflict,” he said. “True normalization must be built on justice and mutual respect.”

Egypt, alongside Qatar and the United States, has long played a key role as mediator in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Cairo has repeatedly warned against any forced displacement of Palestinians into Egyptian territory, stating its readiness to defend its sovereignty.

“The Egyptian Armed Forces remain steadfast in protecting our nation and its borders,” Sisi declared. “We will face any challenge that threatens our security or stability.”

Since the Camp David Accords, Egypt has been one of the largest beneficiaries of US military assistance, fostering decades of close cooperation with both Washington and Tel Aviv.

The latest Cairo negotiations are expected to center on the terms of a Gaza ceasefire, the exchange of captives, and post-war reconstruction efforts, all key components of Trump’s proposed roadmap for peace in the region.
