‘Food is ready politicians’ – NNPP Chairman mocks Enugu, Bayelsa govs for defecting to APC

The National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, Agbo Major, has criticised the recent defections of governors from Enugu, Bayelsa, and other states to the All Progressives Congress, APC, describing the development as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

In an exclusive interview with DAILY POST, Major condemned the defections as “political betrayal”, questioning the motives of sitting governors who switch parties without the consent of their followers.

He said: “I honestly do not understand what a sitting governor hopes to gain by defecting to another party when his followers are not even in agreement with him. This is what I call ‘food is ready’ politicians. It’s a tragedy for our democracy.

“Every well-meaning democrat should be alarmed by this. The strength of any democracy lies in its multiparty nature. If one party controls both the legislature and the executive, real democracy becomes impossible. Without strong opposition, those in power have no one to hold them accountable and that’s the danger threatening our democracy today.

“If a politician truly believes in his party’s ideology, he won’t just wake up one morning and cross over to another party. It shows that there is no deep conviction. That’s the real danger; our politics has become ideology-free, driven only by personal ambition and survival.”
