Lagos boxer kills carpenter during dispute over burst football in Ikorodu

A professional boxer, popularly known as Bintin, has allegedly punched a local carpenter, identified simply as Yellow, to death during an altercation over a burst football in the Adamo area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

According to eyewitnesses, the confrontation began after Yellow, known in the neighbourhood for his fair complexion, accidentally punctured a football belonging to the boxer’s young son.

The boy’s mother reportedly called her husband, who was away from home at the time, to inform him about the incident.

Upon returning, Bintin allegedly confronted the carpenter in anger, accusing him of deliberately damaging his child’s ball.

The heated exchange soon turned physical until the community head, known as the Baale, intervened and ordered Yellow to replace the damaged football.

Witnesses said that Yellow complied and left to purchase a new ball. However, the boxer, still enraged, pursued him and struck him with a heavy punch on the forehead.

The carpenter collapsed on the spot and was rushed to the Agbowa General Hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.

A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity described the boxer as a troublesome figure known for his aggressive behaviour.

“He has always been arrogant and quick to fight. Everyone in the area knows his temper,” the resident said.

Following the incident, Bintin reportedly surrendered himself at the Imota Police Station, where he was taken into custody.

Confirming the development, the Baale of the community stated that the deceased would be buried later in the day according to Islamic rites, adding that normalcy had since returned to the area.

There were initial rumours suggesting that the suspect might have been released, but police authorities dismissed the claims.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident, assuring that the suspect remains in custody.

“Divisional Police Officers do not have the authority to release a murder suspect. I have spoken with the Divisional Head, and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, for further investigation,” she said.
