Lagos Tenancy Bill targets fairness, reduced housing conflicts – Sanwo-Olu

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said that the proposed Lagos Tenancy Bill is designed to ensure fairness between landlords and tenants while addressing recurring disputes in the state’s housing sector.

Speaking on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Sunny Ajose Housing Estate in Ajara, Badagry, Sanwo-Olu explained that the bill, currently before the Lagos State House of Assembly, seeks to promote a transparent and equitable rental system.

According to him, the new legislation, developed in collaboration with the State Assembly, aims to modernise tenancy laws, strengthen rental agreements, and prevent exploitation or arbitrary evictions.

“Everyone aspires to be a landlord, but tenants must also be able to live decently and pay rent without undue pressure.” The bill promotes a partnership where landlords can earn fairly, and tenants are treated justly,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu added that the government’s ongoing housing programmes, including the rent-to-own and rent-to-live initiatives, are already helping residents transition into home ownership. He said the new law would further strengthen these schemes by providing a clearer legal framework for sustainable housing delivery.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making housing in Lagos more affordable and accessible, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, adding that the state will continue to work with the private sector and local communities to deliver modern, inclusive housing solutions.

“The tenancy bill represents a balanced approach, one that allows government, landlords, and tenants to thrive together,” Sanwo-Olu added.
