NNPP clarifies alleged plan to adopt Tinubu as 2027 presidential candidate

The National Chairman of the NNPP, Agbo Major, has dismissed claims that the party might adopt President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its candidate for the 2027 elections.

According to him, the party has made no such decision.

His comment comes amid the ongoing wave of defections from leading opposition parties to the APC.

Speaking with DAILY POST, Agbo Major clarified: “Well, there are two separate issues here: individuals within the party who may be eyeing the APC, and the party itself as an institution.

“Let me start with the party. It is not unusual for parties to explore collaboration in the interest of national stability. What is important is the survival of our democracy. However, I can tell you categorically that as a party, the NNPP has not made any decision to adopt or align with President Tinubu or the APC.”

He added that some former members, particularly Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who have been expelled from the party, are already leaning towards APC, but they are acting on their own and not on behalf of NNPP.

On the possibility of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State joining APC, Agbo Major said: “His case is quite peculiar. He came into the NNPP through Kwankwaso’s movement and was given the party’s ticket. By God’s grace, he won. But since assuming office, he has been under intense control from Kwankwaso, who dictates his every move from Abuja.

“The governor has been politically suffocated and unable to freely govern the good people of Kano State. If his decision to leave the NNPP is to free himself from that stranglehold and better serve his people, then it’s understandable. His situation is not the same as those of the Bayelsa or Enugu governors. So if he eventually joins the APC, we won’t hold it against him. What matters is that he’s able to serve his people effectively.”

Asked whether Kwankwaso and Governor Yusuf could coexist in APC, Agbo Major replied: “That’s a very valid question. I am not privy to whatever discussions they may be having, but I can tell you that it would be very difficult for both men to work together under one roof again, unless the governor chooses to completely surrender himself. Kwankwaso is known to be extremely domineering. In his political movement, subservience to him is total.”
