Nollywood’s Gingerrr nears N400M at Nigerian Box Office
Gingerrr added N39.9 million to its tally over the October 17-19 weekend, reaching a cumulative N322.7 million in its fourth week of release. The romantic comedy, which opened with N127 million on September 26, has held the number-one spot for four straight weekends. Analysts at Nigerian Box Office project it will cross N400 million within weeks, driven by consistent attendance and word-of-mouth.
This will be the 6th Nollywood film to cross the N300 million mark this year and is on course to become the third Nollywood film to reach the N400 million mark after ‘Everybody Loves Jenifa’ (N1.8 billion) and ‘Ori: The Rebirth’( N413 million).
The film’s success underscores Nollywood’s grip on local audiences. Starring Bimbo Ademoye and Wunmi Ajiboye, Gingerrr features humor and romance that have resonated widely.
On X, viewers praised its pacing and surprises. “Solid movie. It’s the best I’ve seen in the cinema this year. 7/10,” wrote user @Bodemula
after a screening. Another highlighted “the plot twists in this Gingerrr movie,” calling it entertaining despite a lengthy finale.
The weekend’s top six, per Nigerian Box Office data, showed Nollywood’s strength with three local entries. The Herd debuted second at N28.8 million, totaling N30.1 million. This thriller marks actor Daniel Etim-Effiong’s first outing as producer and director, co-produced by FilmOne Studios, ToriTori Films, Serendipity HHC, and Airscape.
X reactions focused on their tension and efficiency. Critic Donald Tombia said it “didn’t overstay its welcome” and delivered thrills throughout. Film training holds the key to unlocking Nollywood’s full potentialActor Genoveva Umeh earned nods for her role’s plot twist, with one fan rating it 10/10.
Osamede, a new Nollywood drama, entered fourth with N6.7 million. Produced by Lilian Olubi, who uses the film to showcase that Africans have lost nothing despite artifacts being taken away in the past, she partners with director James Omokwe, who returned to cinema with ‘Osamede’ after years of television success. The movie also sees Ivie Okujaye’s return to the big screen after years of hiatus to start her family.
Hollywood’s Trons: Ares held third at N15.1 million in week two, cumulative N55.6 million. One Battle After Another, a Chinese action film, added N6 million for N62.2 million total in week four. Horror movie, Black Phone 2, opened sixth at N5.7 million.
October has seen Nollywood lead the charts consistently. Gingerrr topped October 3-5 with N53.6 million, October 10-12 with N49.3 million, and the latest frame. The three Nollywood films in the top six last weekend highlight this trend, with local releases capturing over 60 percent of the weekend’s gross.
This surge reflects growing investment in Nigerian stories, boosting cinema attendance amid economic pressures. As ‘Gingerrr’ and ‘The Herd’ extend runs, and word of mouth drives ‘Osamede’, October’s box office is looking to exceed N500 million, despite no big Hollywood push. However, on the downside, this might be one of the lowest earning months, with just March(N790 million) and September (N901 million) being the only months so far not exceeding N1 billion monthly gross.
