NUJ calls for implementation of workers’ promotion exercise in Abia

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State Council, has commended the Abia State Government for approving the 2024–2025 promotion exercise for civil servants in the state.

The NUJ, however, expressed regret that the last promotion exercise has not been implemented, noting that many workers were promoted and issued with Gen. 35, yet their salaries do not reflect their new grades.

This was contained in a communiqué issued by the NUJ after its October Congress, signed by the Chairman, Chidi Asonye, and the Secretary, Iyke Onuegbu.

The journalists described implemented promotions as a motivation for efficiency and productivity and urged Governor Alex Otti to direct all relevant authorities to implement the financial implications of the promotion exercises.

The NUJ also applauded Governor Otti for approving N50 million for the payment of salary backlogs owed to deceased workers in the state over the last 16 years and appealed to the governor to fulfill his promise on the payment of gratuities to pensioners.

The Congress further urged the state government to intervene and compel the power distribution company to ensure proper metering and fair billing of customers in response to recent public outcry.

The Abia NUJ also called on the state government to investigate the causes of recent building collapses in the state and to publish the report on the three-storey building that collapsed in Umuahia.
