OAU condemns armed robbery attacks on students
The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has condemned the recent attacks on some of its students by suspected armed robbers.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, described the attacks as unfortunate and unacceptable.
Olarewaju stated that the incident occurred on Monday, October 20, 2025, when armed men invaded Oreoluwa Hostel, located within Moremi Estate in Ile-Ife metropolis.
According to him, the assailants robbed the students of their valuables and inflicted injuries on some of them during the operation, which lasted between 10:35 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.
“The prompt actions of the University Students’ Union officials, who conveyed the injured students to the University Health and Medical Centre, were applauded by the University administration,” Olarewaju said.
He disclosed that three students sustained varying degrees of injuries and were immediately attended to at the University Health Centre.
“At the Health Centre, three of the students who sustained deep machete cuts to the head and both hands were identified and promptly treated,” he added.
The affected students were listed as “Ogedengbe Emmanuel Oluwafemi, a Part Four student of the Department of Management and Accounting; Emmanuel Akinribiye, also a Part Four student of the same department; and Olalekan David Okemiga, a final-year student of the Department of Mathematics.”
Olarewaju noted that Okemiga was beaten with a machete but fortunately did not sustain any cuts.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, while condemning the attack, commended “the prompt response of officers from the Nigerian Police, A Division, Ile-Ife, and Oke-Otubu Division, Modakeke.”
Bamire “called on security agencies, particularly the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Services, DSS, to intensify patrols around student residential areas to ensure safety.”
He appealed to stakeholders and philanthropists to support the construction of additional hostels within the campus to enable better protection and monitoring of students.
“We wish the injured students a speedy recovery and express gratitude to God for sparing their lives,” he concluded.
The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the incident.
The Command spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi said the police were making efforts to apprehend the culprits behind the dastardly act.
