Police arrest 13 over mob killing of 23-year-old in Edo

The Edo State Police Command has arrested 13 suspects in connection with the killing of a 23-year-old man in the state.

DAILY POST reports that the deceased, identified as Chigozie Ifeonu, was allegedly killed by a mob at the Ogheghe community along Upper Siluko Road in Egor Local Government Area of the state.

The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Eno Ikoedem, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen on Thursday in Benin City.

Ikoedem, who said the violent incident occurred on October 28, 2025, at about 4:45 pm, added that normalcy has since been restored to the troubled community.

According to her, thirteen suspects have been arrested in connection with the stabbing to death of one Chigozie Ifeonu.

“The 23-year-old young man was stabbed in the chest during the disturbance. He was immediately rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, for medical attention, where he was unfortunately confirmed dead by a medical doctor,” she said.

It was gathered that trouble began when a motorcycle rider allegedly raised a false alarm, accusing the deceased of being a thief attempting to steal his motorcycle.

DAILY POST learnt that the deceased had purchased the motorcycle for the rider for commercial purposes, with an agreement for the rider to remit a fixed amount weekly.

The rider was, however, allegedly absconded with the motorcycle for two months after the agreement.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Chigozie, while driving in his GLK Benz on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, sighted the rider around the Hausa quarters in the community.

He alleged that when confronted by Chigozie, the rider raised a false alarm, claiming that he (Chigozie) was a thief attempting to snatch his motorcycle.

“Following the alarm, the youths in the area descended on him, stabbing him to death. The incident sparked retaliation from locals, causing tension in the area,” he added.
