Police arrest 30-year-old man over murder of motorcycle rider in Bauchi
The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Mamuda Zakari Yau, for allegedly killing a commercial motorcycle (okada) rider in Unguwan Sulaiman Adamu Quarters, near the old airport in the state.
In a statement signed by Ahmed Wakil, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, it was revealed that preliminary reports identified the suspect, a petty trader popularly known as Wadata, as having engaged in a confrontation with the victim, 25-year-old Basiru Mohammed, a commercial motorcyclist from Zango Sa’idawa.
He stated that the suspect, Yau, allegedly stabbed Mohammed to death with a knife and made away with his red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, bearing registration number NNG813UM. He added that the victim managed to cry out for help, prompting nearby residents to respond quickly. Some of them chased the suspect, forcing him to abandon the motorcycle and flee the scene.
“In response to the report, a dedicated team of detectives from ‘E’ Division Yelwa was deployed to the scene. The victim was evacuated to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) for urgent medical attention, but was sadly declared dead upon arrival.”
He explained that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, claiming he was driven by financial hardship stemming from his desire to marry a third wife. The suspect reportedly lured the motorcyclist under false pretences and stabbed him with a knife during an altercation.

Items recovered from the suspect include one Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, a blood-stained knife, a pair of shoes, and an Android phone belonging to the suspect.
He added that Sani-Omolori Aliyu, the State Commissioner of Police, has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.
