Police secure conviction of 59 foreign nationals involved in cybercrime 

The Nigeria Police Force has secured the conviction of 59 foreign nationals linked to an international cybercrime syndicate operating in Abuja.

The spokesperson of the command CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a statement describing the convictions as another milestone in the coordinated crackdown on cybercriminals by the National cybercrime centre.

According to Hundeyin, the convictions followed a large-scale operation conducted on November 3, 2024, in the Jahi area of Abuja, where 130 suspects were arrested comprising 113 foreign nationals mainly Chinese and Malaysians and 17 Nigerians.

He said the suspects were involved in extensive internet fraud schemes, sophisticated hacking operations, and other cyber activities that posed serious threats to Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and economic stability.

“Following detailed investigations and the presentation of forensic evidence, 21 suspects were convicted in August 2025, and another five in September. The latest 59 convictions bring the total number of convicted individuals to 85, while trials for the remaining suspects are ongoing,” Hundeyin stated.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to eradicating cybercrime, warning that Nigeria would not become a safe haven for digital criminals.
