Reps call for immediate reinforcement of security in Sokoto amid deadly bandit attacks

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen security operations in Kebe and Tambuwal Local Government Areas of Sokoto State following a series of bandit attacks that have claimed several lives and displaced many residents.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent national importance moved by Hon. Abdushama Dasuki, representing Kebe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency, during Tuesday’s plenary.

Presenting the motion, Dasuki expressed concern over the rising wave of banditry in his constituency, noting that communities in Kebe and Tambuwal have been under constant attacks.

He cited incidents in August where bandits invaded several communities, including Toku, Sengi, and Ongushi wards in Kebe LGA, killing residents, abducting dozens, and rustling livestock. Similar attacks were also recorded in Jabu Kagara and other areas of Tambuwal LGA, leading to mass displacement.

Dasuki noted that the insecurity has forced residents to flee their homes, disrupted education, and worsened poverty as farmers have abandoned their farmlands out of fear.

He also warned that worsening diplomatic tension between Nigeria and Niger Republic has made border communities in Sokoto more vulnerable to cross-border banditry and arms smuggling.

The lawmaker urged the security agencies to adopt a more coordinated and intelligence-driven approach to protect lives and property in rural and border communities.

Adopting the motion, the House directed the Armed Forces, Police, and other security agencies to reinforce operations in the affected areas.

The House further tasked its Committees on Defence, National Security and Intelligence, and Police Affairs to liaise with security agencies for effective implementation and report back within two weeks.
