Senate confirms Aminu Yusuf as NPC chairman

The Senate has approved the appointment of Aminu Yusuf from Niger State as the new chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC).

Also confirmed were Joseph Haruna Kigbu from Nasarawa State and Tonga Betara Bularafa from Yobe State as commissioners of the commission.

The confirmation took place on Tuesday following the presentation of a report by the Senate Committee on National Identity and National Population, chaired by Senator Victor Umeh (LP–Anambra Central).

While presenting the report, Umeh explained that the nominees underwent a thorough screening process on October 14, 2025. He noted that no petitions or adverse reports were received against any of the nominees.

“The committee found the nominees competent and qualified for the positions they were nominated for,” he said.

Umeh added that the screening process required the submission of essential documents such as curriculum vitae, Code of Conduct Bureau clearance, police reports, and DSS background checks. Each nominee also made a presentation before responding to questions from committee members.

The Senate subsequently resolved into the Committee of the Whole to consider the report.

After deliberation, Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the motion to a voice vote, and the nominations were unanimously approved.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier requested the Senate’s confirmation of the appointees in a letter dated July 31, 2025, which Akpabio read during plenary on October 7.
