Southeast youth leaders back peaceful protest over Nnamdi Kanu’s release
The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, a socio-political youth organisation in the South-East geopolitical zone, has thrown its weight behind the call for the immediate release of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.
The group expressed its readiness and resolve to stage a peaceful protest as solidarity for the release of the embattled IPOB leader.
DAILY POST recalls that human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore had called on Southeast governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and religious leaders to join the planned demonstration for Kanu’s release.
The former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, disclosed that he had contacted several prominent Igbo leaders, including Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo; Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti; Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe; and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to join the movement.
The politician also disclosed that he reached out to Atiku through his team, noting that the former vice president’s support would give significant weight to the campaign
The President General of the youth organization, Goodluck Ibem, in reaction said the group had announced its commitment to organising a peaceful protest to demand Kanu’s release from the Department of State Services detention.
Ibem accused the federal government of having a double standard approach towards issues of national security and human rights.
According to him, while the country witnessed negotiations with known terrorist kingpins from the North, individuals responsible for the loss of countless lives and the ruination of numerous communities, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remained in detention.
“This inequity raises serious questions about the motives behind his continued detention, particularly in light of his deteriorating health condition. We believe that the continued incarceration of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not solely a matter of legal proceedings; it is emblematic of broader systemic injustices faced by the Igbo people.
“His imprisonment undermines our collective efforts toward peace, unity, and dialogue in addressing regional and national issues. As youth leaders from the South East, we are committed to advocating for justice and equality.
“We call upon our members, allies, and the general public to join us in this peaceful protest march, as we seek to amplify our voices for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Our protest will demonstrate our unwavering demand for his release,” he noted.
