Sule says many turned against ex-president Buhari after power exit
Abdullahi Sule, the Nasarawa State Governor has condemned what he described as the hypocrisy of some Nigerians who once showered praises on former President Muhammadu Buhari but later turned against him after he left office.
Speaking at an event in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, Sule said it was unfortunate that individuals who benefited politically and personally from Buhari’s administration are now among those criticising his leadership. The governor noted that such behavior reflects a broader moral crisis in the nation’s political culture, where loyalty is often dictated by personal gain rather than principle.
Sule, a staunch ally of the former president, said Buhari’s tenure should be assessed with fairness, acknowledging both his achievements and shortcomings. He argued that history would be kind to Buhari for his integrity, anti-corruption stance, and efforts to lay a foundation for infrastructural growth despite economic challenges.

According to the governor, “It is sad to see that many who hailed Buhari, called him a man of integrity, and stood close to him while in power, are now among those mocking or discrediting him. That is not the spirit of true leadership or patriotism. Leadership should be about consistency, not convenience.”
He cautioned politicians against opportunism and urged Nigerians to show gratitude for Buhari’s sacrifices, noting that the former president governed at a time of global economic instability, insecurity, and political pressure.
Sule emphasized that while no administration is perfect, Buhari’s contributions to national development particularly in infrastructure, agriculture, and the fight against graft remain significant. He added that those now distancing themselves from the former leader are doing so merely to align with new political realities ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Buhari gave his best. He may not have satisfied everyone, but he served this country with sincerity and selflessness. We must not be a nation that forgets its leaders once they leave office,” the governor stated.

The Nasarawa governor also praised President Bola Tinubu for continuing some of Buhari’s initiatives, saying such continuity is vital for national progress. He called on political leaders to avoid playing to the gallery by discrediting past administrations for short-term political advantage.
Political analysts have interpreted Sule’s remarks as a subtle warning to members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) who have sought to distance themselves from Buhari’s legacy amid public criticism of his economic and security policies.
