Tinubu meets regional development commissions, pledges better infrastructure, security

President Bola Tinubu on Monday met with top officials of the country’s Regional Development Commissions, pledging to use the commissions to drive infrastructure development and enhance security at the grassroots.

The meeting followed growing concerns over insecurity and poor infrastructure across the various regions.

Poor development at the grassroots level has been widely criticised, especially in light of the ₦1.57 trillion allocated to the commissions in the 2025 budget, with varying amounts designated to each.

The allocation amounts to an average of ₦225 billion per development commission, which many consider grossly inadequate.

BusinessDay gathered that the meeting reviewed funding challenges and discussed the need to improve basic infrastructure and strengthen security in the regions.

Abubakar Momoh, Minister of Regional Development, who led the team, described the engagement with the President as “fruitful”, adding that “Nigerians will now begin to see real development at the grassroots.”

Momoh, while speaking with State House journalists after the meeting, assured that the Regional Development Commissions have been structured to align rural development planning with the real needs of the various regions.

He also assured that the era of political interference in determining the choice of project and their execution becomes a thing of the past, in an effort to strengthen development at the grassroots.
