Vieira sacked by Genoa after winless start to Serie A season
Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira has been sacked by Genoa following a dismal start to the Serie A campaign that has left the club rooted to the bottom of the table.
The former Arsenal and France midfielder’s final match in charge came on Wednesday evening, when Genoa suffered a 2-0 home defeat to newly promoted Cremonese. Federico Bonazzoli, playing alongside Jamie Vardy, scored both goals for the visitors.
The loss extended Genoa’s winless run to nine matches to start the season, with the club recording only three draws and six defeats, scoring just four goals, the joint-worst tally in the division.
“Genoa CFC announces that Patrick Vieira is no longer the coach of the first team. The club would like to thank the coach and his staff for the dedication and professionalism they have shown throughout their work and wishes them all the best for their future careers,” a statement from the club reads.
“The technical leadership of the first team has been entrusted on an interim basis to Mister Roberto Murgita, assisted by Mister Domenico Criscito.”
Vieira, who signed a contract extension in the summer, had been linked with a move to former club Inter Milan before the season began. Inter ultimately appointed Christian Chivu as Simone Inzaghi’s replacement after Inzaghi left for Al-Hilal.
Vieira leaves Genoa without a single victory this season, as the club begins yet another managerial search in hopes of reviving its Serie A campaign.
