West Ham fight back to claim first home win against Newcastle
West Ham produced a commanding comeback to earn their first home victory of the season, overturning an early deficit to beat Newcastle United 3–1 at the London Stadium.
Jacob Murphy fired Newcastle in front within minutes, driving home from the edge of the area just moments after West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen had struck the post at the other end.
But the Hammers responded impressively. Lucas Paquetá levelled the scores with a powerful strike from outside the box before half-time, igniting belief among the home supporters. Their pressure soon told again as Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s dangerous cross was inadvertently turned into his own net by Newcastle defender Sven Botman, completing the turnaround before the interval.
In stoppage time, substitute Tomáš Souček sealed the points, reacting quickest to slot home the rebound after Nick Pope had denied Bowen’s effort.
The victory was no less than West Ham deserved after a spirited display. They had earlier seen a penalty decision overturned following a VAR review, with referee Robert Jones rescinding his original call after replays showed Malick Thiaw touched the ball before clipping Bowen in the area.
Despite that setback, Nuno Espírito Santo’s side refused to be denied — showing resilience and fight to record their first Premier League win under the Portuguese coach since his appointment in September.
The result lifts West Ham to within three points of 17th-placed Burnley, while Newcastle’s poor away run continues, their winless streak on the road now stretching to seven months.
