Yobe recruits 948 teachers to strengthen basic education

The Yobe State Government has recruited 948 primary school teachers as part of efforts to address manpower shortages and strengthen the state’s basic education system.

Umaru Hassan Babayo, executive chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), disclosed this after a meeting with Governor Mai Mala Buni in Damaturu, the state capital.

Babayo said most of the newly engaged teachers had previously served as volunteers in public schools without formal employment. He noted that the recruitment exercise was aimed at filling existing gaps in the teaching workforce across the state’s primary schools.

“The board is organising workshops for the new teachers to enhance their teaching skills for effective and efficient knowledge delivery,” Babayo said. He also urged the teachers to justify the government’s confidence in them through dedication and commitment to duty.

According to him, SUBEB will step up monitoring and inspection to ensure productivity and accountability in the system.

Governor Buni, while commending the board’s efforts, directed that merit and qualification should guide the recruitment process.

“The board should ensure that only qualified teachers are engaged and adequately trained to deliver quality education,” Buni said, adding that the government would continue to support SUBEB in promoting efficiency and achieving its goal of improving education standards in the state.
