Police, INEC strengthen partnership to ensure peaceful elections in Taraba
The Taraba State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant stakeholders to maintain law and order before, during and after elections in the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Edwin Ogbeghagha, gave the assurance on Thursday when he received INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Taraba State, Dr Sa’ad Umar Idris, and his delegation at the command headquarters in Jalingo.
Ogbeghagha stressed the need for political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct their activities peacefully and comply strictly with electoral laws and regulations.
He assured INEC that the command would continue to implement proactive security measures, intelligence-led policing and effective stakeholder engagement to prevent electoral violence and protect lives and property.
The police commissioner also emphasised the importance of creating a safe environment where eligible voters could exercise their constitutional rights without fear, intimidation or harassment.
He called on political parties, campaign organisations, supporters and members of the public to embrace tolerance, avoid inflammatory statements and shun all forms of violence during the electoral process.
Ogbeghagha further urged residents to report security threats and suspicious activities promptly to the appropriate authorities to enable the police to respond effectively.
He reiterated that the command remained committed to impartiality, professionalism and the protection of democratic processes across Taraba State.
According to the command, the meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the Nigeria Police Force and INEC in addressing shared concerns relating to electoral regulations, emerging security challenges and measures to safeguard voters.
The police command reaffirmed its readiness to sustain collaboration with INEC and other stakeholders to promote peaceful campaigns and ensure a secure electoral environment throughout Taraba State.
