2026 U-17 WWC: Adegbuyi reflects on Flamingos’ hard-fought win over Puerto Rico

Flamingos forward, Oluwakemi Adegbuyi has expressed her delight following Nigeria’s hard-fought 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, DAILY POST reports.
The Flamingos bounced back from their opening-day defeat to Poland with a crucial win over tournament debutants, Puerto Rico in Rabat on Tuesday night.
Adegbuyi, who was named Player of the Match, opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 25th minute, giving the team an early advantage.
Despite Puerto Rico’s determined performance, the Flamingos held firm before Precious Oscar sealed the victory with a second goal deep into stoppage time.
The win leaves Nigeria third in Group B, with the Flamingos needing at least a draw against defending champions DPR Korea in their final group fixture to secure qualification for the Round of 16.
Speaking after the match, Adegbuyi admitted that the encounter was challenging but praised her teammates for their determination to claim all three points.
“The game was not easy for us, but we tried our best and we were able to get the three points today.
"I'm happy and very excited because this is my first goal in these tournaments, on the biggest stage,” she told FIFA.
The forward also described her goal as a significant milestone in her career, expressing her determination to make her family and Nigeria proud.
“I'm very happy to score here, on the biggest stage of my life, because this is just the beginning. I promise to make my family and the whole nation proud,” she added.
The Flamingos will now turn their attention to their decisive final group-stage clash against DPR Korea on Friday as they seek to advance to the knockout rounds.
