Desist from fake news, sensationalism – Ogun CP charges journalists

The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni has charged journalists in the state to desist from fake news and sensational reporting, warning that such practices threaten peace and security.
Ojajuni gave the charge on Tuesday when the newly elected executive members of the Correspondents' Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ogun State Council, visited him at the Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.
The CP, who called for a return to the basics of journalism, said accuracy, objectivity and developmental reporting remain critical in the face of rising misinformation on digital platforms.
He said unverified reports could undermine security operations and inflame tension across the state.
Ojajuni, who described journalists as essential partners in crime fighting, assured the chapel of the command's readiness to sustain synergy with the media to protect lives and property.
Earlier, Chairman of the Correspondents' Chapel, Comrade Yetunde Fatungase commended the police for its efforts in curbing crime and assured of responsible reporting.
"We are here to strengthen the existing relationship between the media and the police, recognising that both institutions play critical roles in promoting peace, security and national development.
"While the police work tirelessly to protect lives and property, the media remains committed to informing the public accurately, responsibly and professionally," Fatungase said.
