ASUU suspends strike threat as Taraba govt seeks two-week extension
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University, Jalingo branch, has accepted the Taraba State Government’s request for an additional two weeks to address the union’s outstanding demands, suspending plans for industrial action.
The union is demanding the full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria/ASUU agreement, alongside other outstanding provisions affecting the university and its academic staff.
The ASUU-TSU branch had, on August 13, 2026, issued a 14-day ultimatum to Governor Agbu Kefas and the Taraba State Government, demanding the implementation of the agreement or face industrial action.
The ultimatum expired on August 26 without what the union described as concrete and verifiable action from the government.
However, ASUU said it refrained from taking industrial action at the time because the university’s combined convocation ceremony was scheduled within the period.
Following the expiration of the first ultimatum, the union issued a final 14-day ultimatum running from September 14 to September 28, 2026.
However, the Chairman of ASUU-TSU, Dr Joshua Garba Mbave, said on Thursday that the union had received official communication from the state government requesting an additional two weeks to enable it to address the outstanding demands.
“The branch communicated the request to the national leadership of ASUU, which directed the branch to consider and accept the government’s request,” he said.
Mbave said the branch subsequently convened an emergency meeting where members unanimously agreed to grant the government the additional two weeks.
He, however, warned that the union would resort to industrial action if the government failed to meet its demands at the expiration of the extended period.
The ASUU chairman appreciated the Taraba State Government for its efforts towards resolving issues affecting the university but urged the government to demonstrate commitment and sincerity in implementing the agreements.
“Fulfilling the outstanding obligations would help maintain industrial harmony and ensure an uninterrupted academic calendar at Taraba State University,” Mbave said.
